This is the unique original Gouache painting by Cecil Doughty.

The largest cannon ever made was built in service of Sultan Mehmet II and used in the siege of Constantinople in 1453. This beast could only fire seven shots in a day but each load was said to be about 600 kilograms and landed with the shattering force of an earthquake.

Even the famous double walls of the city could not withstand such a battering.

Original artwork by Cecil Doughty published in Look and Learn issue 431, 18th April 1970.
