EXTRACTS: British War Comics Illustrators Special © 2018 The Book Palace (144 PAGES in Full edition)

100 Text continued from page 94 with the first of a series about Christopher Columbus with scripts by Mario Basari, and then adapted into comics the novel ‘The Four Feathers’ by A. E. W. Mason. He also drew some episodes of 'Gente di Frontiera', contributed to Ken Parker Magazine , and in 1994 for Sergio Bonelli Editore, along with Stefano Biglia and Luigi Copello, drew the 'Tex' story ‘La Ballata di Zeke Colter’ written by Cladio Nizzi, and published in Almanacco del West 1994. In the mid-nineties, and for Il Giornalino , he wrote and drew the series 'Millenovecento', and illustrated the western series, 'America! America!'. In 2004, Calegari was back illustrating the two-part Second World War story ‘Storia di un soldato’ for the series Mister No (a modern jungle- adventure series). In 2007, and also for Bonelli, he drew the one-shot album ‘Bandidos!’ with a script provided by Gino D’Antonio. In 2011 for Il Giornalino , Calegari illustrated a story taking place in the 1700s in America, and, as mentioned earlier, finished his series about the Orient Express in 2016, this being his latest work. A very capable artist, whose pen and ink style was immediately recognisable, Calegari died on 3rd November 2017 at the age of 84 just a few days after receiving the Turio Copello prize. ● More examples of the Calegari magic from 'Oltre la Frontera' ('Over the Frontier'). Like his colleague, and oft- times collaborator, Gino D'Antonio, his love of the West was matched by a consummate mastery of figure drawing.
