Devlin Waugh could best be described as a diabolic hybrid of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Noel Coward. John Smith’s perversely ironic scripting, and Sean’s superb character designs and innovative artwork, helped make the series a huge hit with readers. The delicious twist of having the central character as a gay vampire was such a diametric contrast to the bull-necked authoritarian Dredd that it added even greater allure to the title. However, as promising as Sean’s career was, working for top-flight UK comics, like many of his contemporaries, his ambition remained to work for the US publishing giants, DC and Marvel .
