77 back to 1981. I’m 18 months into my time with D.C. Thomson and only a few days into my first tour of duty on Commando (I’d like to say that they couldn’t manage without me, but…). The office space is shared with another of Thomson’s “libraries”, Star (Love Stories In Pictures) and, somewhat bizarrely I thought at the time, so are the Editor and Assistant Editor. I can see now what a good fit this was but that’s another story. Ian Forbes, the Editor, sits behind a roll-top desk in the corner, safely out of our eyeline (though somehow he knew exactly what we were up to). George Low, the Assistant Editor, sits at another desk, while the four sub-editors occupy an island of desks, working on story scripts with paper and pencil.
