6 student there when I left school. I virtually breezed through the entrance exams, which I passed with ease. My confidence knew no bounds. My final day at Bromley Tech was a pivotal moment as I left the school gates for the last time. It was goodbye to all that I hated there, such as corporal punishment, detention, lines, and the odious bullies. The journey home was idyllic that warm July afternoon in 1960. As I passed the local shops near home I can well recall a poignant moment. From an upstairs open window nearby, I distinctly heard the theme from the film, ‘A Summer Place’. It was lilting and lush—I felt euphoric and blissfully happy to be free at last. Throughout the summer holidays I was painting and drawing birds of RIGHT: A detail of the cover for Gene Wolfe’s ‘A Book of Days’. Published by Arrow Books in 1985, it was one of an ongoing series that Pennington created for Wolfe’s books. BELOW: The artist in mystical mode circa 1975.
