Not wanting to be left behind, Marvel, the main purveyors of superhero comics, decided to hit the black-and-white comic magazine market, too. Since their main competition brought out comic magazines with full-colour painted covers, Marvel didn’t want to be left behind, and brought an illustrator from the pulps that Martin Goodman, founder of what would later be known as Marvel, had used back in the day when he published mainly pulp magazines.
