58 ABOVE: The P.O.W. Assassins , gouache on board. Male, April 1975. Painting by Bruce Minney (1928-2013). Notice the bulldozer hitting a German armored car in the background (at the top left), bringing to mind one of Künstler’s improbable paintings, and commissioned by the same publisher. starting about a decade ago, a series of events sparked renewed interest in these wild and weird old magazines, and since various books have been pub‐ lished on that particular genre, including art books focused exclusively on the work some illustrators did for the men’s adventure magazines. Robert Deis co-edits part of the Men’s Adventure Library series with Wyatt Doyle, head of the New Tex‐ ture imprint. Through their books, they hope to help rekindle awareness of the wild world of men’s adven‐ ture magazines . Recent books co-edited by Robert Deis include ‘Mort Künstler: the Godfather of Pulp Fiction Illustrators’, ‘Pollen’s Women: the Art of Samson Pol‐ len’, and ‘Eva: Men’s Adventure Supermodel’, a book about artist Norm Eastman’s favourite female model, Eva Lynd. Deis is also creator of MensPulpMags.com , the Men’s Adventure Magazine Blog. Images courtesy of Heritage Auctions www.ha.com Text continued from page 53
