24 After the black-and-white TV series from the 1960s, the Addams family appeared animated for the first time in a Scooby-Doo episode from 1972, and later became an animated series from 1973 to 1975. A television reunion movie was made in 1977, featuring most of the original cast from the 1960s TV show. After the success of two feature films done in the early 1990s (a third film went directly to video), a new animated series was created between 1992-1993, followed by a new TV series called The New Addams Family running between 1998-99. Various attempts have since been made to re-boot the series. The Addams family have also appeared in video games, pinball machines, books, advertising, and, most recently, as a musical (2010). Although changes have beenmade around the family members, the general idea of the macabre and eccentric has still remained close to Charles Addams’ most famous creation. l l For the official Tee and Charles Addams Foundation go and visit: www. charlesaddams.com . Although Addams had been banned from using gags centred around his family of misfits by the then editor of The New Yorker , William Shawn, who considered that the TV series’ low-brow humour didn’t correspond to their sophisticated readers, he still managed to insert his kooky characters in his cartoons every now and then, as seen here with Wednesday and Grandma standing directly behind the conductor’s booth, and Uncle Fester peering out the back window.
