Air War comics, pulp action and a Master from the Golden Age of Illustration. This issue we are going to have some fun and feature a group of humour cartoonists from around the world! We start off with Charles Addams, best known for his macabre sense of humour. Among his many fans was the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, who not only had some of Addams’ originals in his private art collection, but referred to him in his films (most notably in ‘North by Northwest’). Let’s not forget his spooky and kooky family that got turned into a TV show. Next, we catch up with another family—a family of monkeys! Just mentioning the shenanigans of a simian family will immediately ring a bell with our older readers. Lawson Wood’s Gran’pop and his offspring appeared all over the world in the covers of some of the most prestigious magazines, and in a series of children’s books as well (enjoyed by all the family!). ButWood didmore than have fun with a family of monkeys as David Ashford tells us in this insightful view into his career. RoystonWarner Wilson or, as he was known by his many fans, RoyWilson, was one of the most popular comic artists from the British Golden Age of the 1930s. One of the leading artists for the Amalgamated Press’ main humour comics, Wilson would inspire countless other cartoonists not only in England, but around the world as well. His legacy is felt to this day as David Ashford points out in his second feature for this issue. Then we head back in time to the 19th century and cross the channel over to France to recall one of the most famous French caricaturists (and the inspiration for many modern cartoonists), JJ Grandville. Then we meet one of the darkest humour cartoonists in modern times, coming all the way from Turkey. Ersin Karabulut shares with us his Kafkaesque work, and tells us of his simple dream of becoming a cartoonist. We roundoff this issuewithapeek into some of theworkofGeorgian-era caricaturist, Thomas Rowlandson. Have a hearty laugh with us this issue!
