73 The radio show proved so successful, that a movie serial was made in 1938, and by 1949 the show went onto TV. The television show was syndicated for four years, then picked up by CBS, on which it ran until 1958 (although it continued to re-run on syndication for many more years). Two movies were made in the mid-fifties starring Clayton Moore (who played the Lone Ranger on the TV series) and Jay Silverheels (who played Tonto). Further attempts at movie adaptations were made first in 1981, and then in 2013. Both movies bombed at the box office. However, the series would find further success in another media: comics.
