42 went to business school in Missouri, and worked for sixteen years as a graphic designer, before deciding that he would pursue an artistic career instead. Mostly self-taught, Andy was inspired not only by such great Western artists as the aforementioned Remington and Charles Russell, but by other painters and illustrators such as Richard Schmid, Norman Rockwell, Charles Dana Gibson, Bob Tommey and Howard Pyle. Though Andy knew that if he wanted to become a painter and sell his work, he would have to broaden his horizons, so he paintedmany different subjects.
