Published in 1901, is a large and particularly sumptuous volume, containing forty chromotypogravure watercolours, including thirty four full page and two double page plates. Once again, Leloir portrays the Romantic world of Dumas’ Musketeers, and brings to life all the vitality and grandeur of 17th century France. Maurice Leloir was born in Paris on November 1st 1853, and died in the same city on October 7th 1940. He was fortunate to have been born into a family of highly successful artists: Maurice’s father was the historical painter, Jean-Baptiste Auguste Leloir, and his mother, HéloÏse Colin, was a watercolourist and miniaturist. HéloÏsewas also the daughter of the renownedRomantic painter of historical and genre subjects, Alexandre Marie Colin, who was a close friend and associate of Eugène Delacroix.
