88 ABOVE: One of Brooke's watercolours for 'Snow White'. ABOVE TOP: 'Whaleshark'. Yet another haunting take on Brooke's recurring theme of the small child under threat from forces seemingly beyond their control. pleased with my illustrations once a project is finished, I’ve been fortunate enough to illustrate some lovely stories by very talented authors and I’m proud to have been part of those projects. Hopefully, when I look at those books in a few years, I will have forgotten about the things I wish I would have done differently and will just be able to enjoy the story. PR: Have you any projects that turned into a nightmare? BBH: I guess in the very beginning, before I ever received a proper book deal, I said “yes” to some freelance projects that had red flags going in and ended up having endless, minute revisions that were really frustrating. But, I learned from those experiences and, since then, I’ve been really lucky to have worked with smart, thoughtful, kind, and communicative editors and art directors. PR: What would you like to work on for the future? BBH: I have several of my own stories that I’ve been developing and preparing for submission. So far I’ve only illustrated other people’s stories and I’d love the chance to work on my own stories. I’ve really enjoyed working on the Cupcake Cousins series by Kate Hannigan (published by Disney/Hyperion) and would love to illustrate another middle grade book or series. PR: If youwere starting out all over again—would you still make illustration your career? BBH: Definitely! ● ● You can see more of Brooke’s art at: brookeboyntonhughes.com/ She also has a blog where you can keep up to date with her drawings, paintings and procedure at: brookeboynton.blogspot.com/
