36 “I honestly can’t recall having any other plans regarding what I should do as an adult", he admits. ★ ★ ★ Born in 1974, Tomer Hanuka discovered his destiny in Israel, during the economic boom of the 1980s. America was a huge cultural presence no one could escape. The teenager, with his twin brother Asaf, spent his time devouring comics, soaking up the American pop-culture. They were the perfect synthesis of teenagers’ fantasies: hyper-saturated, testosterone fuelled and wildly fantastic. The young Tomer readily embraced this universe and made Marvel Comics , Mad Max and Ninja Turtles the basis of his vocation. A vocation shared with his twin, Asaf Hanuka, who is also an illustrator. “Asaf and I both left Israel in our early 20s. Asaf went to France and studied comics and animation in Lyon, and went on to work for the French comics market.
