When Modesty is hit by a ricochet bullet during the fight with Captain Magnus he supervises her transfer to hospital by helicopter. No suitable drawing. WEST, Mae STORY 37: “THE JUNK MEN”: STRIP 4149 Camel belonging to Ali the peddler. Used to carry away the base morphine Ali found after the plane carrying it crashed. Found wandering about by Modesty and Willie, she leads them back to the place where the tortured and now dying Ali has been left for dead by the beetlemen. When Ali is buried Modesty and Willie leave her to graze while they go to sort out the killers. WESTERN, Peggy STORY 30: “HIGHLAND WITCH”: STRIP 3433 Canadian born niece and only living relative of Stuart Wallace, a multi-millionaire financier and recluse. She decides to visit her uncle at “Wilderness” his country estate and is met by Sister Binks who claims to be his personal nurse but is fact holding her uncle prisoner and forcing him to operate his financial empire to enrich her and her two accomplices, both of whom are former employees. When she spots that the man Binks presents to her as her uncle is an imposter Binks tries to kill her by having her thrown into Coggies Hole, a freak vortex at the foot of a waterfall. She is saved by Modesty, given the kiss of life by Gordon Ritchie, and taken back to Ritchie’s cottage to recover. She tells them what happened to her and is happening to her uncle. With Binks and her gang thinking she is dead Modesty has her appear and apparently disappear in a ghostly manner which frightens Binks and her gang. When Willie tries to bluff his way into the house he is recognised and locked up with Stuart Wallace. Modesty uses the fly fishing skills of Ritchie to get in to the house and sort everything out. When Modesty tells her she would rather not be around when the story breaks and the press arrives she readily offers to stand in for her and spend a holiday with Gordon. Unfortunately he has a one track mind and for a lot of the time it is fishing. Not pleased when she finds out. 190 Drawn by Romero Strip 3548 16th November, 1974 WENG (continued) STORY 92: “DEATH SYMBOL”: STRIP 9764A When Modesty rings from “The Treadmill” to tell him that she and Willie are going immediately to Nepal he packs Modesty’s case and brings it with her passport and all of the usual accessories to Heathrow airport in good time for their nine twenty flight. He is most gratified when Modesty announces that she considers him to be a treasure beyond price and that they broke the mould after he was made. STORY 94: “THE KILLING GAME”: STRIP 10044 Telephones Sir Gerald Tarrant to tell him that Modesty and Willie have now been absent for three weeks, and he is starting to worry. He has set up a special listening watch on his radio recorder but has received no call so far. He tells Tarrant he does not think they have been killed as if any of their underworld enemies had done so they would certainly want everyone to know about it and he would have been informed. He suggests they simply may be having more than their usual difficulty extricating themselves from a current situation. Tarrant greatly admires his sang froid. STORY 95: “THE ZOMBIE”: STRIP 10143 When Dave Goss phones Modesty to tell her he has both a name and a place for the new drug mob that tried to kill him and which has now also kidnapped her friend Danny Chavasse, he is right on the spot with a pad and pen for her. He greets Sir Gerald Tarrant, and provides refreshments when Tarrant calls to tell Modesty and Willie what he has found out about the house in which Danny is being held and that it belongs to a friend of his.
