T H E M O D E S T Y B L A I S E C O M P A N I O N I I WENG (continued) STORY 50: “A FEW FLOWERS FOR THE COLONEL”: STRIP 5426 Having read the cable in Spanish that arrived in London from Maria de Larra to tell Modesty that her husband, Fernando, is badly wounded, that their daughter is in danger and asking for her help he takes it at once to the country. Modesty and Willie are enjoying the social life of the village and a visit from their friend Sir Gerald Tarrant who is watching them give a sky diving display for the benefit of the local hospital fête. Confides to Tarrant that he has told Modesty that he believes country life to be most unsophisticated and that she says he is a snob of the seventh dan. When Tarrant shows surprise that he has read her cable he points out that he needed to do so in order to judge its importance and Modesty would have wished him to do so because he is, after all, a very trusted houseboy. He is instructed to book Modesty and Willie on the first flight to Caracas and contact Sancho Aznar there to ask him to have two emergency packs waiting for her and Willie when they arrive and also would he arrange for the quickest possible transport to the village of San Pedro. Stays on to look after Tarrant for the rest of the weekend. STORY 52: “DEATH IN SLOW MOTION”: STRIP 5659 When Modesty and Willie make their foray into the Isle of Dogs to try to find Detective Sergeant George Sutton, the policeman who used to work with their missing friend Inspector Brook, he drives the back up van. When they save Sutton from the men trying to kill him in the c h i l d r e n s ’ playground he is called to pick them up, together with Foxy Dawlish, the boss of the gang hired to kill Sutton. When they arrive back at the penthouse Modesty and Willie look after the injured Sutton while he questions Foxy Dawlish using the pentothal. Finally has to report to Modesty that the gang boss is not resisting the drugs, he simply does not know who hired him. 186 Drawn by Neville Colvin Strip 5427 12th May, 1982 Drawn by Neville Colvin Strip 5664 26th April, 1983 WENG (continued) STORY 40: “THE GOLDEN FROG”: STRIP 4470 Having already laid out breakfast on the terrace to wait until Modesty completes her early morning exercises he tells her Sir Gerald Tarrant has called and she asks him to join her. Although he is not normally a breakfast eater, Tarrant cannot resist the temptation of sampling the spread awaiting her. STORY 42: “GREEN COBRA”: STRIP 4697A Pilots the Cessna which enables Modesty and Willie to use their ram air parachutes to land on the Isle of Livsay in their search for Jack Fraser. Before the jump he confirms that he has made all arrangements as Modesty has instructed. When she suggests he could easily run a mu l t i - n a t i o n a l company and she cannot understand why he insists on remaining as her houseboy he tells her the variety is so much greater working for her. When they have completed their business with Pandora he arrives with a coaster to pick them all up. STORY 48: “THE SCARLET MAIDEN” TEXT ONLY STRIP 5245 When Willie is given the elbow by Angela in Barbados he rings London and is told that Modesty is in St. Cyprien. Willie hops on a plane and joins her. STORY 49: “THE MOON MAN”: STRIP 5374A Takes Willie’s call after he has been knocked out during the kidnap of Julie Varna. He interrupts Modesty who is on the telephone to Alex Varna so that she can tell Willie that Alex has just assured her, falsely as it turns out, that Julie is safe. When, the same night, Alex is shot when he deliberately puts himself in the way of a bullet meant for Modesty, he ties up the gunman Modesty has knocked out and telephones Modesty’s old friend Dr. Schaffer, a specialist in dealing with bullet wounds, to ask him please to call.
