T H E M O D E S T Y B L A I S E C O M P A N I O N I I WENG (continued) STORY 4: “MISTER SUN”: STRIP 355 While a student at Hong Kong University he sees a newspaper photograph of his sister, Dho Li, who he had believed to be dead. The magazine says she is with a unit of the South Vietnamese Army fighting the Viet Cong. As the head of his family it is his duty to take care of her but to do so he needs money. His failure to get help from his friend Sammy and the belief that he is already too deeply indebted to Modesty leads him to be ensnared by Mister Sun, his last resort. Sun takes the opportunity to revenge himself on Modesty by making him carry a parcel of drugs. He is then held in captivity and used by Sun to force Modesty to do the same thing, anathama to her. She manages to outwit Sun and he is rescued with the help of Willie and Tex Naylor. Initially Modesty treats him with utter contempt for carrying drugs but he is forgiven when she learns his motive and she and Willie join him in the search for his sister. When they do find her he is distraught to discover that she is really a Viet Cong agent and when she tries to shoot Modesty he accidentally kills her. He is brought back to London by Modesty to take up his new duties as her houseboy. STORY 5: “THE MIND OF MRS. DRAKE”: STRIP 512 He has now been installed as Houseboy in Modesty’s London penthouse. His general duties are shown as such things as running her bath and preparing food. He has the run of all the various facilities available within the block such as the use of the swimming pool. STORY 7: “TOP TRAITOR”: STRIP 744 When Willie arrives late at night after his car has broken down on his way home from the airport he prepares the guest room for him. When Willie tells him that he and Modesty might be away for a bit he offers to check her equipment and is cautioned to do it carefully, just like Willie has shown him. It is he who prepares the two special rooms in Modesty’s country cottage that are to be used to interview the two possible spies in Sir Gerald Tarrant’s department, either of whom might have stolen the missing Acorn File, a consolidated list of agents working east of Berlin. WENG (continued) STORY 9: “THE HEAD GIRLS”: STRIP 1023 Waiting for Modesty and Willie with the Rolls when they arrive from Coirath with Carson Bell. Told to shove over by Willie who obviously enjoys driving the Roller. Takes the call from Bell when he asks Modesty to dinner. When Modesty and Willie decide to investigate Superior Secretaries Ltd., he lays out their equipment. STORY 10 “THE BLACK PEARL” STRIP 1129 In his capacity as Rolls chauffeur he drives Modesty and her old friend Mark Scobie back to the penthouse after the opera at Covent Garden. STORY 13: “BAD SUKI”: STRIP 1469 Imperturbably continues to serve Modesty and Willie with dinner while they are being harangued by the ungrateful and stupid Amanda Jones whose life Willie had saved the night before when she was high on LSD and had tried to fly from a tree. Although it is very late it is he who answers the telephone call from Miss Gertrude Porter and puts her through to Modesty. STORY 17: “TAKEOVER”: STRIP 1967 Drives Modesty to her country cottage when she is setting herself up to be captured by whoever had planned the bank robbery in which Bert Carter was killed. When she tells him that she may be away for a few days and he may not be able to contact her he respectfully requests her to be careful.
