Does his best work in conditions that almost all other doctors would find impossible. At his very best in adversity, as is shown here when about to perform a major e m e r g e n c y operation on a native child in a mud hut by lamplight. First heard of in the 1971 novel “The Impossible Virgin” and ten years later in “The Xanadu Talisman” , in both of which he played a major role. His first appearance and visual creation in a strip story was not until four years later. An occasional bedfellow of Modesty’s and one of her favourite people STORY 58: “THE WILD BOAR” STRIP 6217 On leave and exhausted after working in a primitive hospital in Chad and now staying with Modesty at her villa outside Tangier. He goes with them when Modesty and Willie set out in search of the kidnapped René Vaubois, and uses his healing skills to help Vaubois when they find and release him. STORY 70: “FIONA” TEXT ONLY STRIP 7449A Was supposed to be accompanying Modesty on a visit to Chittagong to see and help the Lathams in their hospital but fails to turn up at the airport. No explanation is given. STORY 73: “THE YOUNG MISTRESS”: STRIP 7750 Between jobs and staying in London with Modesty at her penthouse. Working as a locum. Called out to treat a patient, Marian Hall, who has been beaten by Bruce Lacey. When Lacey attacks him, Modesty puts Lacey and his minder, Hooker in their place. Insists that Marian tells Modesty her troubles and that Modesty will deal with them. Seen off at the airport by Modesty on his way to a new job. PENNYFEATHER, Dr. Giles (continued) STORY 84 “HONEYGUN” STRIP 8928 Staying with Modesty at “Pendragon” for a break from his work at a Mission hospital in Chad but also doing volunteer work at the local childrens hospital. When Boris, one of Honeygun’s men is shot during an assassination job in Rabat the man’s older brother, who is also part of her gang, kidnaps Giles from the hospital and takes him to their hideout in an ancient deserted fort in Wadi Bedrou to tend to him. Boris becomes Giles’ patient and he operates to remove a bullet from Boris’s body, saving his life and setting him on the road to recovery. When Modesty and Willie come to rescue him they have to take Boris with them because Giles will not leave one of his patients unattended in such circumstances. This makes for a number of serious problems that Modesty and Willie are obliged to deal with, which is particularly irksome as it is very likely that the man they have saved will probably be tried for murder and shot. STORY 91 “CHILDREN OF LUCIFER” STRIP 9653 Having a winter skiing holiday with Modesty and Willie in the Sierra Nevada mountains and staying in John Dall’s winter home, “The Cabin” near the village of Eagle Fork. On a ski outing with them he blunders into the almost dead body of Joanna Martin, the victim of a murder attempt ordered by Luke Blenkinsop, head of the Satanist cult “The Children of Lucifer”, based at the nearby “Blackwings”, a mansion built during the gold rush. Revived and under his care, Joanna reveals Blenkinsop’s plot to kill the heads of three Mafia families as part of his revenge for his daughter Nicola who died from an overdose of drugs and the later death of his wife from a broken heart. In the context of his oath to preserve all life he persuades Modesty to try to stop Blenkinsop from murdering the Mafia people. When two of the Children of Lucifer come to “The Cabin” looking for Modesty he cons them into believing they have a dangerous disease. They force him to administer what they believe are life saving drugs but they are actually barbiturates which knock them out.
