His is one of the names in the dossier that it took The Network three years to compile and which is now being sent to Sir Gerald Tarrant to be opened in the event of anything unpleasant happening to Modesty or Willie. On one occasion when Modesty was after some very valuable information from the Farbstein Corporation, he snatched it from under her nose. Later he sent her a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a charming note of apology. Now, having beaten Salamander Four to some high value information which they have undertaken to obtain from the Kallgren Laboratories in a similar manner, he is on the run from them. Shot in the arm but not seriously wounded he manages to crawl to the house of Alex Hemmer who is carving a statue of Modesty. Not initially recognising him, Modesty first deals with his wound, then simply protects the now unconscious man from his pursuers. When he wakes up he recognises her and introduces himself. He tells her that the business has changed and S 4 are now employing killers to get what they want. He has set up a travel arrangements from nearby Ivalo to Leningrad and then across Russia to retirement in Australia. Recalling her respect for him, Modesty helps him on the first stage of his journey, still pursued by S 4 killers, one of whom is himself killed by Modesty.
