T H E M O D E S T Y B L A I S E C O M P A N I O N I I 376 SALAMANDER FOUR International criminal organisation originally engaged in industrial espionage now prepared to undertake any criminal activity so long as it pays. Totally apolitical. Made its first appearance in 1972 in the eponymous story in “Pieces of Modesty” , subsequently turning up in one further novel and one later short story and five strip stories. Had not been known to either fail to complete or renege on a contract until it was opposed by Modesty. Not happy with its failure to maintain its one hundred per cent success record. “PIECES OF MODESTY” P 128 “SALAMANDER FOUR” Having been beaten to their industrial espionage contract objective by Waldo, they pursue him across Finland and try to kill him. When Waldo stumbles wounded into the house of the sculptor Alex Hemmer for whom Modesty is posing for a statue, she intervenes and with help from Willie the S 4 agents are defeated and Waldo is able to escape. This is the first time ever that S 4 has failed to complete a contract. Modesty and Willie take out insurance against reprisals by having a copy of their Network dossier on S 4 deposited with their old friend Sir Gerald Tarrant. “DEAD MAN’S HANDLE” P 146 Salamander Four accepts a contract from Thaddeus Pilgrim to kill Dinah and Steve Collier on a dead man’s handle basis. When Pilgrim is killed and the contract is thereby set in motion Modesty immediately advises Sir Angus McBeal that if the contract is fulfilled either she or Willie will kill him and the three other principal directors of Salamander Four. The contract is duly cancelled and to prove it the fee refunded to the Colliers. “COBRA TRAP” P 127 “OLD ALEX” Salamander Four has issued the contract to Las Sombras to have Modesty murdered. When this fails it issues a further contract, this time to Skendi, the Albanian assassin, for the same purpose. In both cases Sir Angus McBeal disagreed with the actions being taken and distanced himself from them. He even goes so far as to warn Modesty of the Skendi contract. This internal dissention brings about the withdrawal of the organisation from all activities. Drawn by Romero SALAMUT “LAST DAY IN LIMBO” P 71 Boss of a gang destroyed by Modesty in Network days.
