E X P A N D E D E D I T I O N ALBERT “THE SILVER MISTRESS” P 103 Porter in the London block housing Moesty’s penthouse. ALEXANDROU, Albert “MODESTY BLAISE” P 142 Sir Gerald Tarrant’s man in Cairo. Code name Uncle Bert. He is used by Tarrant to locate Modesty and Willie when they set their “live bait” caper in motion to get inside the Gabriel set-up and it looks too all intents and purposes as if they have reverted to their former criminal ways and that the temptation of Abu-Tahir’s diamonds has proved too much. ALI BABA MODESTY BLAISE (DC COMICS) P 90 Although not specifically named in the illustrated novel and is only referred to by Willie as Ali Baba, he is clearly the Albert Alelxandrou who is Sir Gerald Tarrant’s man in Cairo in the original novel. The first drawing of him shows him in a car with a gun to Modesty’s head as described on page 146 and he takes Modesty and Willie to where Tarrant and Paul Hagan are waiting. ALIKI “I, LUCIFER” P 95 Extremely jealous girlfriend of Willie’s from a village near Heraklion. They used to sleep in a single bed on castors on the balcony. She got the idea that Willie was after some other girl and in the middle of the night pushed him off the balacony, bed and all. He is now unable to sleep in bed with castors. He describes this as his Aliki Complex. It is why he took the castors off his bed in Modesty’s penthouse. ALKEMADE “THE IMPOSSIBLE VIRGIN” P 246 According to Willie, a wartime airman whose parachute burned up before he could put it on so he jumped out of his blazing plane over Germany at 18,000 feet rather than be burned to death. Fell for nearly two minutes then went through some fir trees loaded with snow and down on to a big mound of underbrush covererd by a snowdrift. Suffered a twisted knee and strained back. ALVAREZ, General “MODESTY BLAISE” (DC COMICS) (TEXT ONLY) P 13 Leader of the rebels against whom Willie has been fighting in a South American banana republic revolution. He is expected to decide the fate of Willie and the other prisoners when he arrives at the jail in which they are being held. It will probably be hanging. In the original novel the name was used for a sergeant so it is he who is illustrated. ALVAREZ, Sergeant “MODESTY BLAISE” P 21 In charge of the South American prison in which Willie is being held after having been captured fighting in a South American banana republic revolution. AMBOINES “COBRA TRAP” P 185 “THE GIRL WITH THE BLACK BALLOON” Terrorist group invented by Mountjoy to conceal the identity of his gang when it undertook a kidnap in Holland. ANGEL (Angelica) “THE SILVER MISTRESS” P 9 Ex-prostitute now working for Colonel Jim Straik in his blackmail operation. An evil and vicious child/woman, her favourite weapon is a piano wire garrotte. She fears Mrs McTurk, who was her Madame when she was a prostitute but fears Mr Sexton even more as he is the one who punishes her when she mis-behaves. Is given the job of garrotting Lucy Straik as a final treat. ANITA “DRAGON’S CLAW” P 175 An American girl Willie met in Ankara when he was relaxing after a Network mission. Very seriously into Hemingway and Greene. She really wanted “the earth to move” while “having sexual congress”. On one occasion it actually did when she and Willie just happened to be making love during a local earthquake. 307 T H E M O D E S T Y B L A I S E C O M P A N I Drawn by Dick Giordano Drawn by Dick Giordano Drawn by Romero
