The watch indicated to her that Danny was still alive. Modesty needed Paxero and Damion free and unaware of her interest in them in order to try to find out what had happened to Danny. Sir Gerald Tarrant was very upset that Willie’s plan had been abandoned but relented when given the full explanation. “THE XANADU TALISMAN” P 156 He asked Willie to accompany him on a visit to an English educated minor Saudi Arabian Prince who had expressed an interest in marrying one of his many daughters. He felt unable to assess so anglicised a suitor and needed Willie’s opinion. Having visited the Prince’s desert palace with its eighty sumptuous apartments furnished in various exotic styles, with its own enormously deep artesian well, solid gold bathroom fittings, six swimming pools and an army of slave- servants he was revolted by the ostentation and the suit was rejected. He took Bora into his Sheikdom and made him serve hard labour as a slave for life. Although he is not specifically named in the illustrated story he can be identified with reasonable certainty by his dialogue in the two versions. Thinks he is a big liar to tell her the injuries to his wrists and ankles were caused by an octopus that tried to eat him. AHMET “THE XANADU TALISMAN” P 174 Bedouin friend of Modesty who she met when she was a goat-herd with Abu-Tahir and his people. AILEEN “SABRE TOOTH” P 51 Scottish girlfriend of Willie’s. Tallish, lovely body, gorgeous complexion and according to Modesty the most marvellous auburn hair. Mad about golf and sex. He found her inability to keep them separate to be quite disconcerting. ALÂEDDIN “THE XANADU TALISMAN” P 117 Brother of Fauzia Martel, brother-in-law of Henri Martel, and uncle of Georges and Bernard Martel. Hermit living in a great cave where the desert meets the Atlas mountains in Morocco. He has for many years bought literally anything and everything brought to him and stored it in his cave. Never sells anything. As a then unnamed child, Modesty sold him a car wheel that she had stolen. Later she returned to sell him the mule and goods of Mahjoub, the wandering Arab who had captured and raped her and who she had killed. Recognises her from those days and is even now, many years after the transaction, able to locate and produce the very same wheel she sold him from among his goods. He is holding the parcel containing “The Object” for his nephew Bernard. When he allows Modesty to open it, he begs her to take it away. He fears its value. Refuses to leave when she tells him he is in great danger from Prince Rahim and El Mico. The delay he causes allows the Silk brothers to trap Modesty, Willie, Dr. Giles Pennyfeather, Tracy June Martel and Little Krell in the cave. Drawn by Romero
