Sponsored by Sir Howard Presteign, he has organised the archaeological dig at the site under the supervision of Professor Tangye. Having become concerned by the reports he has received from Tangye he has sought the advice of his old friend Tarrant and wants him to send someone out to check on what is going on. When Tarrant, Modesty and Stephen Collier call at his home they find him dead at the foot of his stairs with a broken neck. ABRAHAM, Joe “PIECES OF MODESTY” P 51 “THE GIGGLE WRECKER” Film director working in West Berlin for one of John Dall’s companies. ABDUL ONE-EYE “THE XANADU TALISMAN” P 226 Berber of the Sorgu Tribe known to Modesty from years ago during her childhood wanderings. Sends him greetings via the Berbers around the Pit in Xanadu. ABU-TAHIR, Sheik Drawn by John Burns ABU-TAHIR, Sheik (continued) Ruler of Malaurak, a small patch of rock and sand between Syria and Iraq. Took in the already fierce but at that time nameless child who was later to become Modesty Blaise. He ordered that she be given food and then set to work as a goat-herd. She stayed with his tribe for six months and she later claimed to have been the best goat-herd of all of his people. Having eaten his salt Modesty became bound to him within the laws of desert hospitality. In the days of The Network when she heard that oil had been discovered in his Sheikdom she was glad for him. When an attempt was made to overthrow and kill him and to usurp his kingdom, she came with Willie Garvin, guns and men to help him defeat it. Loves Modesty like a daughter and refers to her as El Sayyide, The Princess. A man of natural courtesy and generosity and an old and valued friend of both Modesty and Willie. “MODESTY BLAISE” P 33 Staying at the Ritz in London while he is in negotiations with the British Government for the Malaurak oil rights. He has demanded and been granted an initial payment of ten million pounds to be paid in diamonds. They are to be transported from Cape Town and delivered to his bank in Beirut. He has heard rumours that someone is planning to steal them and thinks Sir Tarrant is cunning to ask Modesty and Willie to guard them for him and to destroy these bad dogs who are wishing to take them. It is his total disregard for diplomatic formalities that allows him to lead the rescue operation to the island of Kalithos. Drawn by Dick Giordano A
