98 a serendipitous way, brought him back to his work on Wulf the Briton some twenty years earlier. Ron’s work with Frank Graham was to become an ongoing project, with paperback books, postcards and a substantial hardbound collection featuring the bulk of Ron’s work, ably assisted by his daughter Gillian, who provided black and white illustrations for several of the topics explored. In 1974, he was commissioned by the magazine This England to undertake a series of paintings of characters from the works of Charles Dickens. Twenty studies were produced which were published between 1974 and 1979. They are full of the warmth and charm which In 1972 Ron met the Northumberland publisher Frank Graham whilst on a family holiday in Morocco. The two men hit it off and a long lasting friendship resulted. One of the fruits of this relationship was a series of illustrations that Ron produced for books and postcards that Graham was publishing on the history of Hadrian's Wall in the time of the Romans. The art that Ron produced was a welcome return to a theme that had underpinned his rise to fame as artist of Wulf the Briton . Text continued from page 88
