17 ABOVE AND LEFT: Paintings inspired by Cornish clay workings. During the war Ron's wife, Liz, had been evacuated to St Denys in Cornwall, in the heart of the clay- quarrying area near St Austell. In 1960, Ron, Liz and Gill went on a pilgrimage of sorts to revisit the area and the people she had stayed with. Ron produced a series of paintings inspired by the extraordinary industrial landscape.
