This is the Signed unique original Gouache painting by Severino Baraldi.

The men who worked on the Canal had little chance to remain healthy because they worked and lived in areas of swampland with insufficient food. Most became ill with malaria and yellow fever.

The insert shows John F Stevens who brought some sanity into the Panama project being the chief engineer on the Panama Canal between 1906 and 1908. Stevens' primary achievement in Panama was in building the infrastructure necessary to complete the canal.

He rebuilt the Panama Railway and devised a system for disposing of soil from the excavations by rail. He also built proper housing for canal workers and oversaw extensive sanitation and mosquito-control programs that eliminated Yellow Fever and other diseases. This is the original artwork for illustration on p15 of Look and Learn issue no 934 (15 December 1979).
