Ferdinand Magellan. The conditions on the journey across the Pacific were appalling. Without fresh food or drink, the men were reduced to eating rats and the leather off the yardarms. Magellan must have breathed a sigh of relief when they reached the Philippines where he and his men met friendly natives who were prepared to trade with them for food.

Ferdinand Magellan's expedition became the first expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean. Magellan died before completing the entire voyage.
